Several electrical retail providers serve Union County. Fire inspections

In order to preserve and protect public health and safety, and to satisfy the requirements of North Carolina's General Statutes, the N.C. Fire Code requires periodic inspections for the purpose of identifying activities and conditions in buildings, structures and premises that pose dangers of fire, explosion, or related hazards. In no case may inspections be conducted less frequently than once every year for hazardous, institutional, high rise, and assembly firms with 50 or more employees and, once every three years for business, mercantile, storage, and all others not listed. Health inspection

All eating and lodging establishments, day care, and nursing homes should submit a N.C. Engineer and Architectural Plan to the Environmental Health Services for approval, (Union 283-3553 or 283-3767) (Anson 694-5188).

Insurance

Workers' Compensation is becoming an increasing concern for all businesses. Even though North Carolina has one of the lowest rates per $100 of payroll, an entrepreneur must make necessary budget requirements. Businesses need to have adequate general liability insurance, facility and equipment insurance, vehicle coverage, and need to consider bonding, theft and fraud coverage. Consult with a local business insurance agent for this and possible other insurance needs. For state assistance on any insurance need contact N.C. Motor vehicles

Natural gas

North Carolina Natural Gas Corporation services selected areas of Union County. For assistance or information contact N.C. Natural Gas Corp., 821-6666. Monroe and Wingate areas are served by City of Monroe, 282-4311. Gas in Anson (1-800-275-6264).

Telephone service

ALLTEL Carolina serves the eastern and western portions of Union County out of different offices. It also serves Anson County. For Anson County and eastern Union County, including Marshville, Wingate, and New Salem, contact 704-624-2101 for residential service or 704-847-9095 for business service.

For western Union County, contact 704-847-4828 for residential service and 704-847-9055 for business service.

The central portion of Union County, including Monroe and Wingate, receives service from Verizon. Contact 800-483-4300 for residential service and 800-483-5300 for business service.

A handful of competitive local exchange carriers service portions of Union County.

Numerous cellular and wireless carriers are represented in the two counties.

Water and sewer

Distribution of water and sewer services is available in the towns and certain parts of the county.
